My name is Laura Lowery, and I’m a faculty member at Boston University in the Department of Medicine. I decided to start a blog today. This blog is not about my job, but about the life that I have outside of my job.
First, a bit about my background…I grew up outside of Los Angeles, in the San Fernando Valley. I went to college at the University of California, San Diego, and I majored in Biology with a minor in Hebrew Literature. I spent my first few years of college immersed in Residence Life leadership, where I discovered my love for working to improve the undergraduate student experience.
College is a pivotal and transformative period in many young people’s lives, and I wanted to support them during this period. But I also loved Biology, and during my senior year, I joined a biology research lab and I became a teaching assistant. Through these activities, I developed my desire to become a professor, and I set off on the long journey towards that goal. I received my BS in 2000. After a gap year doing research at UCSD, I went to MIT and received my PhD in Biology in 2008. I then did postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. I joined the Biology Department faculty as an Assistant Professor at Boston College in 2014. I received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018.
While I was professionally successful there, I did not fit into the conservative BC culture. After making a series of missteps on my part, which then led to rumors about me that had no basis in reality, I realized that Boston College was not a good place for me to continue my professional and personal development. Thus, I moved to Boston University School of Medicine/Boston Medical Center in 2020. There, my research lab studies various aspects of cell and developmental biology, mostly focused on how cells move. Check out my lab’s website or my BU faculty profile for more information on my research. Back when I was teaching, my favorite class to teach was Cell Biology for undergraduates, although I am not teaching at this time. I also used to have a life advice website in which I posted short videos for my former students, but now it is just a landing page for a few resources that are important to me.
When I am not working or spending time with my children and my partner, I enjoy watercolor painting, writing, reading, and continuing to explore how I can become a healthier version of myself. My goal for this blog is to record my ramblings as I try to figure this out.
